Horizon Public Library Suite Details ![]() Contents of the Horizon Public Library Suite
Staff Searching – The primary interactive link between staff and the library collection. It consists of user-oriented query functions for search and retrieval of bibliographic database records. Staff Searching interacts with the authority records and interfaces with multiple library subsystems, such as circulation, serials, and cataloging. It connects the system, local and wide area networks, and other computer systems via Z39.50. Web Reporter – A simple new tool for standard reports, ready to use without the library staff having to know the database schema or SQL scripts and commands. Standard reports can be modified and saved for sharing with other library staff or other Dynix libraries. Launcher – Brings the whole Horizon system to your desktop as a single application. Improved navigation takes users directly to functions they need, less time is spent navigating menus. Horizon now functions as a multi-document interface (MDI) with each major function occurring as a window in the main Launcher frame. Launcher settings follow the user (by being tied to a user's login) instead of being tied to a particular workstation Special launcher profiles can be created for specific functions, and profiles are fully customizable.
The most important and valuable component in library automation is the database. In Horizon, the bibliographic database is the central focus for each individual module. All modules will search and update data from independent clients that access the database through a network. All data resides on a single database. The Cataloging module is where librarians maintain that database by creating, importing, and exporting records. Horizon's Cataloging module is designed to give your staff the greatest amount of control over your data with the greatest amount of flexibility offered in client/server systems today. Horizon provides efficient cataloging operations with very strong support for your bibliographic database. Horizon Cataloging includes:
One of the modules that most directly affect patron satisfaction is circulation. Functions in circulation happen generally as face-to-face interactions between library patrons and staff. For a positive interaction, the circulation module must perform its checkout task quickly and it must provide ready access to specific information about patron accounts. The Horizon Circulation module quickly and efficiently performs these tasks, increasing patron satisfaction while accurately managing circulation policies and tracking materials. Horizon Circulation includes:
Horizon Information Portal is a web-based information portal that provides users a powerful information search and retrieval tool that can be used to access a wide variety of library resources. These resources can include the library catalog, subscription databases, web sites, or enrichment content. Horizon Information Portal is the most configurable and customizable Public Access Catalog available. Dynix recognizes the need for a powerful and complete information portal and is continuing to add functionality that enhances this capability. Horizon Information Portal includes:
Acquisitions has been designed to accommodate the acquisition of all types of items, and to interact dynamically with the Horizon Serials Control module. Horizon Acquisitions is designed to help library staff manage the processes involved with collection development, freeing them from repetitive data entry tasks by linking related acquisitions data together. Horizon Acquisitions include:
Debt Collect provides a unique, cost effective solution for recovering long-overdue library materials. Available for Horizon libraries this solution has been made possible through a partnership between Dynix and Unique Management Services. Horizon Debt Collect generates reports capable of tracking delinquent patrons and providing automatic updates to Unique Management Services for further attention. Libraries have reported a recovery rate of at least 50% for overdue fines and materials when using Horizon Debt Collect in conjunction with Unique Management Services. Horizon Debt Collect:
Community Resources allows libraries to provide their users centralized quick easy access to information pertinent to each community. Users can search News Papers, Event Calendars, Clubs and Organizations and Questions and Answers. The Community Resources module uses Community Information MARC 21 Concise Format tags to ensure data that conforms to standards.
Home Services provides unique access to users who aren't able to come into the library. It allows the library to create a profile for each user listing the types of items that user would like to checkout. After reading the book, the user can rate how they liked each item. Users can determine the frequency of visits. Special notes can be attached to each user making sure that they get the items they want in a timely manner. |
