General

Staff Searching – The primary interactive link between staff and the library collection. It consists of user-oriented query functions for search and retrieval of bibliographic database records. Staff Searching interacts with the authority records and interfaces with multiple library subsystems, such as circulation, serials, and cataloging. It connects the system, local and wide area networks, and other computer systems via Z39.50.

Launcher – Brings the whole Horizon system to your desktop as a single application. Improved navigation takes users directly to functions they need, less time is spent navigating menus. You can open email, word processing programs and bibliographic utilities without leaving Horizon. You can have a bibliographic record open alongside a purchase order, or multiple bibliographic records open simultaneously, enabling visual comparisons. All windows can be moved, resized, maximized and minimized, and staff can make font and color changes to their display that follow them no matter what workstation they log in to. Launcher settings follow the user (by being tied to a user's login) instead of being tied to a particular workstation. Special launcher profiles can be created for specific functions, and profiles are fully customizable.

Horizon Acquisitions

With its purchase order templates, distribution patterns, and direct interfacing with vendors through Edifact and the new Vendor Integration Protocol (VIP), Horizon Acquisitions provides power and efficiency in day-to-day materials ordering and processing. The system clearly outperforms the competition in terms of integration with web-based vendor shopping carts, making use of online features and eliminating the purchase order paper trail.

Horizon Cataloging

Horizon Cataloging helps to improve the accuracy of your authority records with the Horizon Authority Loader using NACO normalization standards. The system provides MARC error checking, MARC tag assistance, and spell check in order to catch errors before they are saved to your database. The MARC editor also provides word processor-like editing features such as cut, copy and paste, drag and drop, and changeable colors and fonts (to suit each staff member's preferences).

Horizon provides full Unicode support for cataloging, complete with support for different keyboard layouts and a diacritic toolbar (no more remembering hex codes!). And for consortia, Horizon provides record ownership features so that it's easy to tell who owns (and who has rights to) each record.

Horizon Circulation

One of the modules that most directly affect student satisfaction is circulation. Functions in circulation happen generally as face-to-face interactions between library users and staff. For a positive interaction, the circulation module must perform its checkout task quickly and it must provide ready access to specific information about student accounts. The Horizon Circulation module quickly and efficiently performs these tasks, increasing student satisfaction while providing staff with the tools they need to manage user data, item requests, and routine item circulation. Horizon Circulation includes:

  • Offline Circulation
  • Receipt Printer software
  • User Import/Export
  • Self-CheckOut
  • Notices, including email
  • SIP2 Interface
  • NCIP Interface
  • Inventory Control

Horizon Information Portal

Horizon Information Portal offers instant access to all of your library's electronic resources such as subscription databases, digital collections and your library catalog via its consolidated searching functionality. Information Portal is accessible from your library, home, or office. It delivers immediate results using proximity, adjacency, cross-index, and advanced Boolean searching over the Internet. For use with any standard web browser, it is the sole user interface both inside and outside the library. User empowerment features include the ability for library users to place their own holds, check the status of their accounts (such as fees and fines), change their own PIN numbers, and create book lists which can be printed or emailed in different formats.

With Horizon Enriched Content, your catalog is bursting with visual appeal and information previously unimagined - cover art, book reviews and summaries, author biographies and tables of content. In addition, Horizon Consolidated Searching allows you to search your catalog and your web databases - all of your electronic resources - with a single query.

Horizon Reserve Bookroom

For academic libraries, the Reserve Bookroom module can help ensure that your critical Reserves desk is efficient and accurate. Horizon Reserves enables staff to create item records (which can be searched for in the catalog and then sent to Reserves with no rekeying), instructor records, and course records. After you set up these records, you can place items on reserve and withdraw items from reserve. While an item is in reserve, you can determine the loan period and other circulation privileges for the item, which can be different than the item's normal circulation parameters. When an item goes off reserve, you can archive the item record or both the item record and the bib record. These archived records will be available if you need to place the item on reserve again.

Horizon Serials Control

Horizon Serials Control provides seamless efficiency in Serials prediction and check-in, enabling your Serials staff to focus more time on collection development and serving your users. Serials Control is closely linked to Horizon Acquisitions to ease tasks such as ordering and recording invoiced charges. Serials copy records are linked to master bibliographic records and contain copy-specific information such as location, media type, and prediction patterns. The Prediction function itself is second to none, enabling staff to predict even very irregular publication patterns which in turn helps to ensure the speed and accuracy of your check-in records. The checkin of an issue automatically updates that serial's Summary of Holdings, which displays in real time to your users through the Information Portal.

Horizon Serials Control includes a binding feature that increases the efficiency with which you gather and ship serials to binders. You organize serial issues into bundles for binding, create groups of bundles for shipping, and track the status of issues you have shipped to binders. When you receive bound issues, Horizon automatically collapses your records for individual issues into single bar-coded records for these newly bound volumes.

Horizon Web Reporter

Horizon Web Reporter is the reporting engine that satisfies all of your reporting needs. It's powerful, yet easy to use. It comes with many pre-built reports, yet enables your library to easily customize existing and create new reports. It lets you share those reports with your peer libraries. Horizon Web Reporter is ready to use without the library staff having to know the database schema or SQL scripts and commands. Its optional enhanced reporting tools, scheduled and exception-based reporting and powerful Intelligent Cubes allow your library to go beyond anything that has been available in the past. Horizon Web Reporter is the most flexible and powerful reporting solution available to libraries and is an impressive companion to the Horizon Information Management System.
