The "Interesting Times" of Intellectual Freedom

There is an old Chinese proverb that states "may you live in interesting times." This is a most interesting time of librarianship and an important time in championing librarianship's core values of intellectual freedom and privacy. In this post 9/11 world, however, these values, in some quarters, appear expendable. Examples include those sections of the USA Patriot Act that affect libraries and the Children's Internet Protection Act.

Broadcast live from the 2nd Annual Joint Conference of Customers of Dynix, Inc. and the Horizon Users' Group, Ms. Krug will discuss these issues and explain how the American Library Association and other organizations are developing mechanisms to help citizens protect themselves.

Judith F. Krug, Director of the ALA Office for Intellectual Freedom since 1967 and Executive Director of the Freedom to Read Foundation since 1969, received her B.A. from the University of Pittsburgh where she studied political theory. In 1964, she earned her M.A. at the Graduate Library School of the University of Chicago, and has held positions in various Chicago libraries-including Reference Librarian at the John Crerar Library and Head Cataloger at the Northwestern University Dental School Library. Before assuming her present duties in the Office for Intellectual Freedom, Ms. Krug was the research analyst for the American Library Association.
