You want your library to provide faster services with more materials. The New Numbers Racket
Andrew K. Pace - Technically Speaking
Published in: American Libraries, October, 2004

While it might be said that not all librarians love automation or the all-consuming power technology holds over their patrons, it's still safe to say that t most systems librarians love statistics. To libraries, numbers are the raison d'etre-gate-counts are down, virtual reference numbers all the way through the roof, ARL ranking are up (or down), and of course everyone loves a system that helps that can tell them all the books in the Dewey 820s published before 1980 that have circulated fewer than three times.

Walter Minkel - A Smarter System

The earlier generation of systems—those created in the 1980s and 1990s—did an admirable job of compiling a school's collection into a database. But the latest generation is far more ambitious: it's capable of gathering together hundreds of school collections into a single, unified catalog.
